Caravaggio Lifts Moon Fairy Cup
By Epsom Ace

Bharath Singh-trained Caravaggio lifted the Moon Fairy Cup with consummate ease and justified his favouritism. Jockey Christopher Alford rode a flawless race astride the four-year-old by Razeen out of Priceless. Caravaggio is the property of Dr Vijay Mallya.

Daniel David-trained Burst Of Speed was fancied by a section of punters despite the severe penalty she incurred after securing back-to-back wins. The filly, in fact, ran a fairly decent race despite her top-weight. As Sea Monarch shot to the front, the front-running filly was obviously unhappy. Nevertheless, she finished a good third. Alford bided his time till the top of the straight where he positioned his mount well for the kill. Under his urgings, Caravaggio raised a winning gallop.

It was not a very lucrative afternoon for the David stable as their Desert Image succumbed to Mystic Force in the day’s opening event, The Estocade Handicap. The piping hot favourite had all the chances but failed to get the better of Mystic Force, on whom Vinay Jaiswal was going hell for leather. There was nothing much else in the field and the best of the rest was Sundancer.

Cuba Libre brought some cheer to the yard as she made every post a winning one in the Stringfellows Handicap. Her victory was pretty impressive considering that she was conceding 7 kg to the other fancied runner Arielle. Kayadhu continued to play bridesmaid and pipped the latter for the runner-up berth.

Two absolute shockers from the stable of Harvinder Singh Bath left punters in a daze thereafter. The totally neglected Moment Of Love won the Sreepriya Handicap while the favourite Castle Queen finished in the ruck. Tracking the speedy Rithambhra till the distance post, Moment of Love swept aside the opposition without even being stretched. Maznavi was another disappointment in the race.

Afzal Khan, who rode the winner, completed a double for trainer Bath when he grabbed the upper division of the Record Reign Handicap with Raging Bull. The four-year-old gelding got the better of the heavily backed Ardent Prince at the post with Arti Doctor-trained Torrential not too far behind. Aesthetics was never in the hunt and failed to give her backers a run for their money.

The Arti Doctor stable pulled off a great win with the chestnut colt Bach in the lower division of the same race. Apprentice Ajoy Roy atop Royal Dance shot into a five-length lead but Kamlesh astride the chestnut was not unduly perturbed. Near the distance post, Royal Dance started shortening his strides and Bach showed a clean pair of heels thereafter. Asiatic Boy was the medium of a good-sized gamble but he never threatened the front pair though he finished a good third. This run should bring him on and he will be a force to reckon with next time out.
