The Calcutta Winter season kicks off on Sunday. The fortnight’s lull before the storm provided a much-needed respite to the professionals and their wards before getting ‘back to business’. This year, 35 racedays have been framed over a period of five and half months concluding on April 16.

During this period, almost 600 horses stationed at this centre will be vying in 226 races to bring home a piece of the total pie which is worth nearly Rs 9 crore. This healthy amount of stake money is certain to attract several worthwhile outstation runners.

Barring the two frontline stables of Vijay Singh and Daniel David, which are likely to be at the finishing line more often than not with their powerful artillery, some of the other names which are likely to be heard of during this long winter trek are Arti Doctor (Raghuvansh, Nitrous, Special Star, Snow Queen), Pesi Shroff (Anastasia, Adriana, Accessor, Corazon, Terrazas), Arjun Mangalorkar (Aboline, Abs Fabs) and Sanjay Kolse (Harmonica, Ming). Also expected to bolster the Vijay Mallya stable are the likes of Arabian Prince and Sans Pareil, while the Katrak yard from western India may choose to send here Sea Ruler and Highland Crown. The last named was in fact an acceptor for the Monsoon Cup.

Despite the threat from the other stables, the numbers are in favour of Vijay and Daniel. The former has a star-studded A-brigade in Arctic Force, Ascriptive and Azureus while the latter’s Star Bright and Fair Option are a couple of youngsters to watch out for. David will also have his tested stuff like Diabolical, Grand Madame and the inevitable Bountiful Talent lifting his winners’ tally.

Well over a hundred two-year-olds are in station and some of the better ones will be seen in action in the big races on New Year’s Day which has been a tradition at this centre. There are 20 ‘A’ licence trainers and 10 with ‘B’ licence. Once again, the big names among the riders in the country will be seen on most major racedays. The monsoon season was considerably livened up by boys like Srinivas Rao and Kadam and the duo are certain to make life a little difficult for local champ Christopher Alford.

The handicapping was pretty steady during the monsoon season and it created several close finishes. The ’capper has wisely chosen not to drop the scale for the winter season after a short break of two weeks.

That way, the unraced youngsters and other non-winners won’t be at a disadvantage.

So all you railbirds, gear up for a thrilling season ahead and hold on to your form books, because that is what it all adds up to eventually.
