Trainer T Srinagesh owners Mr. Sunil Kumar Sethi and Mr. Jitendra D Parekh leading Zycon (C.Ruzaan Up), winner of The Fire Haven Cup

Zycon, trained by T. Srinagesh, won the Fire Haven Cup, the main event of Monday’s races at Hyderabad. Jockey Choksy Ruzaan, who missed his mount in the second race due to a delayed flight, made it on time for his ride on Zycon. Scubarioo was backed down to the exclusion of the other runners, with a lot of spirited betting coming his way. Zycon had emerged clear midway up the straight with Scubarioo starting to raise a challenge. The two were involved in a stirring fight in the last 100 metres and Zycon prevailed by three-fourths of a length, covering the five furlong distance under a minute. Chief De Mission moved from the rear to finish third. Srinagesh, who trains a relatively small string of horses, should be complimented for keeping this three-year-old filly in top condition. Zycon has so far won five races from the time she has started to race last winter and has finished close in her other races.

Shehzad Abba’s Al Sarraah came out victorious on debut, but not before getting to know the feel of the stick. Vivek, who had replaced Ruzaan on Orient Glory, had gone ahead on the straight and was kicking on when Al Sarraah, responding well to Chouhan’s hard ride, came up with gigantic strides to get the race in a smart timing.

Pradeep Chouhan pulled off another win in the very next race, the higher division of the Sangam Plate, on Netto’s Yours Mine N Ours. Scorcher led till the last 200 metres and gave up finishing sixth. Yours Mine N Ours took over and won with a comfortable margin, keeping at bay the late finishing Jay Jay.

Donald Netto’s stable has been firing at regular intervals this season and the day turned out to be fruitful, with Netto leading in Temple Bells in the concluding race to register a double. Temple Bells tracked Realtor till the top of the straight and decided to surge ahead. Leo Dvij joined Temple Bells in a fight and at one stage had put his neck in front but complacency on the part of the rider Stephen Carson and the persistence by Gnaneshwar put Temple Bells in front by half a length.

The Goldie Brown team led in a double through Modest Bride and Star Composer. Modest Bride stretched out well after taking over on top of the straight and won by a big margin. Paymaster edged out the early leader Scorching affair to finish second. The favourite Auburn Star was withdrawn after she refused to get stalled. It is the first time she has behaved so adamant at the gates.

Star Composer bagged the lower division of the Blue Bird Plate, to give Mr. M.A.M.R, Muthiah, Satheesh and Imran their double. Waiting in second position, Star Composer surged ahead as the horses showed up on the straight and scored a convincing victory. Lanchashire rallied along the rails to take the second spot. Sir Onslaught covered ground to finish third ahead of Rudolph Valentino and Lady Escort in a close finish.

Penumatcha got the better of Ravileena, on the post in an absolving finish, in the lower division of the Hussain Sagar Cup. Ravileena led right from the word ‘go’ and had a three-length lead, passing the distance marker. Penumatcha started to close the gap, with every stride and the two went abreast, past the winning post. The magic eye went in favour of Penumatcha by the shortest of margins. Dancing Harbour wobbled after getting close to another horse and dislodged the rider P.S. Chouhan near the 200 metres marker.

Leo, who missed the lower division on Ravileena, claimed the higher division with a 10 to 1 chance Accordian. Deep Shanker took a useful lead on his mount, entering the straight and staved off a late bid by Hunting Boy. Allegation moved in along the rails to take the third spot ahead of Stroke of Luck. The much favoured Southern Spice drifted out from close to the rails at the final turn and finished a poor fifth. Stormy Gladiator and Yippee were withdrawn.

A tight finish in the opening race went in favour of Try Me Today. Moving in swiftly from a fifth position, Try Me Today encountered Cannon Vision in the last 100 metres and prevailed by a short head at the wire.
