Racing fraternity may have now been well aware of Equine Influenza or Pyrexia of Unknown origin that put racing on halt for many months and even one of the racing centres had to call off its season prematurely. But common man is still unaware of it. Now, in order to bring awareness among the common people, veterinarians of Uttarakhand have started an excellent effort by launching a statewide drive about the flu which has so far claimed the lives of more than 40 horses/mules.

Recently, the veterinary doctors organised a camp at Nainital, which is situated in the northern part of Uttaranchal. In the presence of a huge gathering, doctors described everything about the deadly disease. The doctors also interacted with the horse owners. They made the presentation of how to examine the horse's eye and leg, give medicines to the horses and also distributed medicines to the owners.

The veterinarians advised the owners to give the usual fodder to horses and they should be kept in hygienic conditions. The Gramin Krishi Vikas Samiti (Rural Agriculture Development Committee) of Haldwani, which organised the camp in association with Brook Hospital, a non-governmental organisation of United Kingdom, has taken up the matter of horse flu seriously. One of the representatives of the Gramin Krishi Vikas Samiti infomed me that last year when the equine influenza had spread out in the northern region of Uttarakhand, it was their committee that treated the affected animals and even owners were told about how to stop the disease from spreading and save their horses.

It is noted that equine influenza was found among the horses in Nainital, when race courses were closed down last October.

At least, an initiative to create awareness about the disease has come about as a welcome note for the horse owners for whom entire livelihood depends on the horses/mules.
