Treble for Christopher Alford
By Epsom Ace

Kolkata. March 20, 2009

The short six-event race card at the Calcutta racecourse on Friday threw up a couple of outsiders in the form of Accardo and StormingSuccess.

The last named won the RWITC Cup in a dramatic finish from second favourite Antenor who finished full of running. The on-money public choice Azureus was taken by Christopher Alford on a start-to-finish mission but he failed to kick on at the distance post where Javed Khan-trained Storming Success forged ahead. Meanwhile Antenor was facing traffic problems as Rawal failed to position him for the
home-run. Md Islam on the eventual winner rather adventurously blocked any passage that Rawal was contemplating of using.

In the race for the Army Cup for three-year-olds only, there was considerable betting on Daniel David-trained Suits Me and Bath-trained Secret Whispers. As a result, the odds of Accardo expanded to 5/1. The colt by Flitch out of Crown Dancer was judiciously handled by C. Alford, who had him a handy second behind the front-running Crush On You. The fancied pair were out of the frame till the bend while Spectacular Style was well positioned to strike. He finished well to be a length behind the winner.

The General AS Vaidya Memorial Cup saw owner-mate (Black Dahlia) of the on-money public choice Able Associate on a start-to-finish attempt over the mile trip. At the distance post, the top-weight was smoothly piloted by C. Alford to sail past the pace-setter. It was clear that he was a cut above the rest. However, the best of the rest was undoubtedly the ‘Dahlia’.

Trainer Deepak Karki pulled off a well measured gamble with Temptation. South Inida’s A. Qureshi rode an excellent waiting race on the second favourite while Storm Zone set the pace. The public choice Gold City left her chances at the gates. The consistent but aged Golden Image finished a game second.

The Jaiswal clan had a firm grip on the opening event with three runners. Their Secret Hero with top-weight jockey Rajinder made no mistake as he romped home clear of Aragon.

Rajinder tried runaway tactics with Glory of North in the day’s final event, the Assurance handicap but Christopher Alford on the favourite Appertain narrowed the leeway at the distance post and forged ahead subsequently with some powerful riding to complete a well-deserved treble.
