Punters were by and large satisfied with the day’s proceedings on Saturday. Barring the rank outsider Corvino in the opening event, first and second public choices dominated the card of eight events. The main event, The Indian Champion Cup, saw Diabolical win a surprisingly hard-fought race. The challenge came from unexpected quarters in the form of Echoes of Light. Taking the Daniel
David-trained chestnut to the helm of affairs from the outset, A Imran Khan was compelled to use the stick freely when Echoes of Light loomed large on his flank. Regal Connection was seen to finish on strongly along the rails. The rest of the field were simply outclassed. The winner took home a little over Rs 16 lakh. The Indian Airforce Cup saw Christopher Alford ride a power-packed finish astride Accalia after declaring 1kg over weight. He got the better of Rawal on Chardin close to the winning post. Precede also ran a fairly impressive race to finish third. The Acorn Stakes run over seven furlongs saw Daniel David’s Cascades put in a great run to get the better of Terrazas who tried to steal a march. Agility showed early speed but faded out in the home stretch. The Eastern Air Command Cup was a duel to the finish between Saddlers Star and the favourite Lil Miss Sunshine. The latter won by the narrowest of margins. Atherton seemed uncomfortable in this company. Christopher Alford’s first mount of the day, Andeana, looked a winner at the distance post. But the favourite Rommel with Neeraj Rawal atop had other ideas. The colt collared the filly close home. The Allodium handicap saw debutant Radiant Star installed as the firm favourite. It was however The Red Rose who showed early speed as she is wont to do. Radiant Star followed her all the way home without being able to collar her. It was a pretty impressive show from the filly. Mystro finished fast to be a good second just ahead of the favourite. The day’s final event, The Allied Forces Handicap, saw Arti Doctor-trained Impressive Wish come good. Imran Chisty used the inside draw to stay ahead of the favourite Piato who finished third. The surprising runner-up was the aged Cosmos. |
