The Mysore Winter Season 2008-2009, which has been plagued by the dreaded Equine Influenza, has been finally called off. A decision to this effect has been taken by The Chairman and Stewards of The Mysore Race Club. The main reason for this eventuality was the physical condition of the horses. More than 500 horses are stationed at this centre and a majority of them are aged six years old and over. A large percentage amongst them are still to fully recover from the illness. It will not be prudent to resume racing without being absolutely certain that the horses are fit to race. A further break of a couple of months should be more than enough to see the race horses returning back to racing fitness.
The months of March and April are the hottest months in this part of the country. It is for this very reason that racing comes to a halt during the said period. The track becomes bone dry and there is a scarcity of water in the city. After the announcement confirming the cancellation of the Winter races, it was announced that the Mysore Summer Season shall commence in the month of May. The racing activities shall continue right through till February 2010, as the three seasons (Summer, Main and Winter ) merge into each other.
