Trainer Kishore has the "Midas Touch"
By Pearcey

Mysore, Wednesday, December 23, 2009
First season trainer Kishore had announced his arrival on the racing circuit with a well-backed treble last week at Mysore. He bettered it with a fourth linker, including a hat-trick, this afternoon. He had performed creditably in the written and oral tests conducted by the Bangalore Turf Club at the end of the Summer Season, and was one of the two professionals to be granted a trainers license at this centre. Kishore sought patronage through his numerous connections and was able to collect a large number of horses under his charge. He seems to have the "Midas Touch", as the very same horses who were unable to come close to winning in recent times have sprouted a pair of wings. Old-timers may argue that all of them had come down in handicap, but the fact remains that it needs a good trainer to get them into winning condition. Masurathi, Chamcha In Chief, Pokemon Master and Super Sha won for the stable on Wednesday.

The Victory Zone Cup, a sprint race for horses in Class III was the trophy event amongst eight races framed for the day. Real Magic and Vertex were the only three year-olds in a field of 12 acceptors. Real Magic was the best performed of the lot, and had lost on the post in her previous start. The small made filly was carrying a backbreaking weight on that day. Darashah decided to run her in the higher class at a much lower handicap. Real Magic was receiving weight from her adversaries and punters lost little time in backing her down to firm favouritism. The odds against second favourite Bridge Too far began to expand, while a late surge of money on Kishore's Super Sha saw this runner shortening in price.

It is a universally accepted fact that when things are destined to fall in place, nothing can stop them. Super Sha was destined to win and Real Magic was not. Real Magic took a fly jump from the gates, made rapid ground through the field, overtook the front-runners and set sail for home. She was travelling well within herself and had a firm grip on this race. A hard-ridden group led by Super Sha, Bravo Bedford and Hawaiian Sunrise were in futile chase. The scene changed alarmingly in the next few seconds. For some unknown reason, Real Magic stopped in her tracks and allowed her pursuers to storm past her in the final stages of this race. Rajesh Babu ridden Super Sha led this brigade and was followed by Bravo Bedford and Vertex. A public announcement subsequently confirmed that Real Magic was found to be in distress after the race, as she had bled through her nostrils.

Rajesh Babu completed a treble with Super Sha, as he had already won on Masurathi and Pokemon Master earlier in the day. Both these runners had scored in the lowest class and had scored in identical fashion. Masurathi galloped late onto the scene and collared early leader Mahseer close home. The odds against the favourite Land Of Smiles began to expand alarmingly and it was clear that she was not at the races today. Land Of Smiles was lethargic at the gates and made no effort to improve her position. Similarly, Pokemon Master raced in mid division and allowed Amazon and Leather Queen to cut the early pace. Rajesh Babu pulled him out at the bend, and essayed his challenge. Pokemon Master proved to be much too strong for Leather Queen and beat her with a measure of comfort. Record Time was able to gallop late and save place money for her connections.

Apprentice Chethana won the fourth race for Kishore. Riding rank outsider Chamcha In Chief, the young boy showed a lot of maturity while handling his charge. He held him in fourth place while taking the bend. Chamcha In Chief became keen at this stage and wanted to quicken. Chethana gave him his head and rode relentlessly. Strongly fancied Regal Image tried his best to gain ground on the leader, but the task looked extremely difficult. Chamcha In Chief strode away from Regal Image and Karumba.

The day's opener saw seven two year-olds parading in the paddock. This was the second such event this season. Leading trainer Rakesh had won the first with Rasili a fortnight ago, and he was set to win today's race with Princess Nero. She looked wonderful in the paddock and was supported accordingly. The confidence of her camp was reflected by the choice of jockey on this filly. Lesser-known Jimmy Paswan was declared to ride the odds-on choice today. She justified the short price offered on her with an authoritative victory. Princess Nero, despite receiving a knock in the early stages of this race, came with fluent strides and ran away from Behram and All For Cash. The last named was the most impressive amongst the beaten group. He galloped on the outer portion of the track for most of the way and lost precious ground by doing so. He still managed to finish a respectable third. All For Cash must be earmarked for an early success.

Rakesh had to wait a while before saddling another winner. Public choice Nectar Jewel carried the bottom weight to a fluent victory over last outing winners Lush Foliage and Time Speed. Rakesh's decision to declare apprentice Khurshad to ride this favourite was praiseworthy. The speedy horse loves to race in front, and with another three kilos off his back, Nectar Jewel revelled under the conditions and romped home in style. Lush Foliage is in tremendous form and Darashah will have to find a suitable race for her in the near future. She distinguished herself by carrying 63 kilos into second place.

The day's racing ended with a fine win for Appachu's Live It Up. She had been steadily brought down in the ratings and was running over her optimum trip of a mile. The five year-old mare was the medium of some inspired betting. Live It Up was backed to the exclusion of her rivals, and in no time, displaced odds-on favourite Forgivenforget at the top of the betting boards. This trend indicated a couple of things. The first being that Live It Up was fit for the fray, and that her camp was confident about her abilities. The second, and more important one being, that the unsound Forgivenforget was not at his best today. The latter point got confirmed, when Forgivenforget was found trotting lame at the gates and had to be withdrawn prior to coming under the starter's orders. Live It Up ran as expected and scored a bloodless win over a tired bunch of horses. Magical Ecstasy and Way To Wealth led the rest of the runners. The backer's of the winner were dismayed to learn, that the withdrawal of Forgivenforget had cost them a major portion of their winnings in the form of statutory deductions by the bookmakers.
