A string of sponsored races over the next couple of months has placed the Royal Calcutta Turf Club on a new high. The club is looking ahead optimistically to the festive season. Casino Royale Goa, who sponsored the 1000 Guineas, will also be sponsoring the 2000 Guineas on
Saturday.
Recalling the heyday of racing at this centre during the sixties and seventies, senior steward Kishore Bhimani felt confident that RCTC is once again laying the foundation for a glorious decade to follow. “Our stake money for the big races is as good as any centre’s. As such, we can no longer be patronized by the leading turf authorities. Abs Fabs winning the rich Calcutta Derby last year may have been the turning point in our fortunes. Now, this new list of sponsors gives us bright hope for the future,” said Bhimani.
The sponsored races during the next couple of months are The Nanoli Stud Calcutta Gold Cup on 19th December, The Poonawalla Calcutta Oaks on Boxing Day, The Vijay Sicka Memorial Cup on New Year’s Day, The Kunigal Stud Indian Produce Stakes on New Year’s Day, The Eveready Calcutta Derby Stakes on 10th January, The AB Stud Thoroughbred Produce Stakes on 10th January, The Police Commissioner’s Cup (by Diamond Beverages Pvt Ltd) on 16th January, The B K Poddar Cup on 16th January, The Calcutta Million (by Assam Tea Company) on 13th February and the Bookmakers Association Cup on 20th February.
The traditional pomp and pageantry associated with New Year’s Day races will be in evidence as the Members and Monsoon Stand that were under renovation will be opened to patrons on that day. The advance sale of New Year’s Day tickets will commence on Boxing Day. So all you local railbirds, brace yourself for a season to remember!
