Western Verse (USA) – Gone West x Reams of Verse - owned and exported for shuttle duties in 2004 between California and Australia by Arabesque Stud Farm, has had his first winner on 24th July 2009 when 2 year old filly NEUTRAL VERSE (Western Verse –Spanish Accent by Esperanto) scored over 1100m in the Chitticks Bakery Mdn Plate at Warrnambool in Victoria, Australia for owner-breeder-trainer Simon Mahony.

This confirms the faith and confidence Arabesque Stud Farm had in Western Verse’s abilities. Arabesque sent him abroad thus vindicating what trainer Henry Cecil said to Ms. Ritika Brar of Arabesque Stud. Trainer Cecil invited Ms Brar for breakfast at his home at Warren Place in Newmarket, Suffolk, England a day after she bought Western Verse. “Western Verse is out of classic and multiple group one Champion Reams of Verse and hails from the immediate family of top class Sires including Elmaamul and Zafonic. He had tremendous ability and speed and was precocious. I can see him making a top class Stallion and his progeny handling any ground. He’s sure to get 2 year old winners,” Cecil had professed.

Western Verse was imported to India by Arabesque Stud Farm in 2003 for stallion duties. He was the first and only son of Champion Sire Gone West to come to India. Unfortunately, he had a very small first crop in India (7 foals). However, his second crop was larger and some of them have started striking in India as well. After his purchase, many breeders worldwide showed keen interest to purchase him, that at a great profit to Arabesque Stud which was politely turned down. It was in 2004 that the opportunity presented itself and despite the uncertainties associated with this type of a venture, as it had never been done before, and at great financial risk and expenditure, Arabesque Stud took the plunge to be the pioneers. This was a very difficult proposition, as at that time, the horse had to go via the USA to quarantine, before shipping out to Australia. Not forgetting that Brars of Arabesque Stud Farm (Ritika and her father, Mr DS Brar) accompanied him, when he made the three day road journey from the Punjab to Mumbai, travelling only at night, to beat the May summer scorching heat, as the only available flight was out of Mumbai to Los Angeles.

Western Verse has certainly lived up to the expectations and confidence reposed in him. Here’s hoping he has many more winners in Australia and the USA and will always have a very special place at Arabesque and may he rest in peace, wherever he is.
