I called Chris Hayes. He confirmed that he is not coming to Mumbai to ride Set Alight in the Indian Derby. "I would have loved to come. I did my best. My owners want me here. There are meetings on Saturday, Sunday and Monday in Ireland. Two year-olds, there are some good ones and I have to ride them."
I asked Hayes if he was asked for his opinion about who should be aboard Set Alight. "I had no role. It was the owner's decision. Mallesh knows the filly well." I tried to reach Mallesh Narredu and it took several attempts. Finally, I got through. We exchanged pleasantries. "Yes, I will ride Set Alight. I have been doing work with her. She cannot be better. I have won four races with her including the Bangalore Derby in record time." "She is better and stronger. The heat is going to have an effect on everybody. It is very dry. I am hoping my filly will handle it well. Abs Fabs, the Calcutta Derby winner, is a big danger. Autonomy is another horse who is a threat. I am confident, may I say, very confident. Set Alight is a special filly." |
