The day started off with the favourites obliging in the first two races. Thereafter, it was a parade of outsiders. The grey, Chief De Mission led the parade upsetting in the first leg of the jackpot pool. It started to rain during the loading of the sixth race and the downpour got heavier as the runners got back to the unsaddling enclosure. With the light fading fast and the visibility getting poorer, the Stewards exercising their powers under Rule 41-G of The Hyderabad Race Club resolved to cancel the last race of the day. The Punters were thus saved of a probable complete washout.
The conspicuous event of the day was The Asaf Jah VII Memorial Cup, run over 8 furlongs. Classic Art, who had finished third one and half lengths behind the winner Lancashire in his previous outing, reversed the order winning from Lancashire, on whom J.H. Christopher was shifting lanes looking for a clear run. Bold Blast finished third with a late run. Indian Dancer, who went into the race with two consecutive wins to his credit this season, put up a poor show finishing fifth.
The upper division of The Perceived Value Plate was the first leg of the jackpot pool. The parade of the long shots started here. Rudolph Valentino had started this season with a rating of 80 and after three listless performances had managed to come down to 71. With Jockey Suraj Narredu entrusted to ride, Rudolph Valentino was installed as the favourite at 10 to 6 on, with the rest of the field drifting to over sixes. Some spirited betting on John Galt a few minutes before the race brought the odds on Rudolph Valentino to Evens. Rudolph Valentino, the favourite was looking like a winner approaching the winning post when the grey gelding, Chief De Mission unleashed a terrific run to pip 'Rudolph' on the post. Jockey Shaikh Farookh had lifted his hand in jubilation even before the judge could deliver the verdict. Bossie Girl was run in check in third position in contrast to his front-running tactics which had proved fruitful in her last outing.
The 'Upsets Syndrome' did not effect Carte Blanche who repeated his performance in The Red Satin Plate, the opening race of the day. Carte Blanche's win was easier than it looked. Shot into the lead on entering the straight, Suraj Narredu had literarily no task on his mount. Vijay Dhanush finished second with Montush taking the third spot. Ninja Power who finished fourth could not get much assistance from the rider as his right leg was out of the stirrup right from 1000 metres.
The lower division of The Karimnagar Plate was won by Satheesh schooled Private Dancer. Lucrative (ex Cannon Lad) relished her new name and started her mission in right earnest on the home stretch. Private Dancer came alongside and passed the unrelenting Lucrative who fought back before going down by half a length. Execute, who was bracing the rear till the bend, finished third. Going Places, who was sighted in the last position 150 metres from home, came like a bullet to finish a close fourth.
Good Speed was a bit tardy at the start and was the last to jump out in the lower division of The Perceived Value Plate. Improving steadily, Good Speed joined the tussle with Star Crush and Favourable Terms on the final stretch. Apprentice R. Umesh, who completed riding ten winners a week ago, rode with confidence and managed to hold on by a neck from Adelaide who covered almost four lengths in the last 100 metres. Star Crush and Favourable Terms took the minor placing.
Superflous paid Rs 58 on a fiver in The Pleasure Hunt Plate. It had begun to drizzle heavily as the loading commenced and the visibility was relatively poor. Superflous was running a close third rounding the final turn and utilized the opportunity to go into the lead which he maintained till the end. It was a three-horse finish for the minor placing with Nandanvanaa finishing second ahead of Earth Bender and Indradhanush. Earth Bender came in with a late burst.
