It was an amazing performance by the trio of owner Dr M.A.M. Ramaswamy, his trainer Daniel David and their retained rider, B. Prakash. They combined fruitfully to notch up a delectable quadruple at the Calcutta racecourse on Wednesday.
Their conquests included the day's main event, The Bhisma Cup, won by Star Team. Fashionably bred by Al Nasr Alwasheek out of Pleasures, Star Team produced a wonderful gallop in the straight to sweep past the front-running Coco Chanel. Aristotle lost position midway through the race while the favourite Rockefeller was totally unimpressive.
The afternoon commenced with the grey Bountiful Talent making mince-meat of his seven rivals in the Vagabond Handicap. It was a no-contest as the Delhi contestants Beauty of Man and Alamgir occupied the minor placing several lengths behind. That victory set the ball rolling for the 'Star' trio.
Then came the win of Patrick Quinn-trained Quaoar ridden by P. Chouhan. Allowing the speedy Arabian Music to call the shots till hundred metres from the winning post, the winner unleashed a tremendous gallop along the rails to hoist the winning flag.
Chouhan however failed to deliver the goods on Hymn Star in the very next race, the lower division of the Sophisticated Lady Handicap. Apprentice Imran Khan stole a march with Arcobaleno who won despite drifting out. The favourite Light of Law had nothing in her tank after the half-way point. Zafir's victory in the Zeenee Handicap was not totally unexpected. The Shafiq Khan-trained colt ran a great race last time out but was surprisingly neglected in the ring. The chestnut was well ridden by jockey Ashish. Flash favourite Little Mombo was not disgraced as he finished a good runner-up while top-weight Majestic Falcon was
Prakash's sole losing mount.
The win of Agnation in the Silver Dawn Handicap must be credited to his rider Christopher Alford who rode a well-judged race and a powerful finish to stave off the fast-finishing Simply Perfect. Alford's pace judgement in the 2000 metres race was exquisite.
Portpatrick (another Alford mount) was the rage of the ring in the Court Minstrel Cup but the recent import from the south came a cropper after bringing the field into the straight. Prakash encountered no problem whatsoever in guiding Daniel David's Royal Falcon to a fluent victory. Punters continued to back the local ace Alford in the day's final race The Zipper Cup. But it was Prakash once again who put paid to the pretensions of the favourite with Elegant Road.
