Mr. Jaydev Mody had a successful weekend as all his three runners were well fancied and won with complete authority. Pillatus came out of a long lay-off and went about his task as if he was never out of action. He implied in no uncertain terms that he is capable of an encore as well. Monopoly played 'catch me if you can' to the hilt and looked fast enough to even put up a fight! The icing was provided by Yana who yet again showed her class and won the Johnnie Walker Gold Label Fillies and Mares Stakes (GR 3), with awesome ease. Gruezi, who was expected to provide some resistance, ended a tame second.
A small field of seven was dispatched by the starter and the Bangalore challenger Agassiz assumed the role of a pacemaker. Tigress Noire, Yana, Oyster Princess were close behind, the second named travelling well in hand throughout. Gruezi was ridden off the pace and the other two were the back-markers. They were travelling at a good pace and Yana stepped up the momentum as they neared the turn. Yana (Razeen–Zaya) was in complete command as they turned for home and the rest were in futile chase. Kamlesh did tap her couple of times and this only aided Yana in creating a new record, stopping the clock at 1: 51.59!
Speaking to Indiarace, Mr. Mody said he was expecting all his runners to win easily. "Pillatus was running after quite some time and was not fully fit either. He won nevertheless, on sheer class. I am mighty pleased with his success. Monopoly is in rousing form and I had no doubt in my mind that she will prove too quick to her rivals. She has been clocking well under the minute consistently for the scurry and speed is definitely her forte. Yana, in my opinion had no business to lose. She is in rousing form and has impressed me time and again. She stays well and likes to go longer. Her victory was a delight, but not a surprise," said Mody. On being asked of her next assignment, Mody added, "We are targeting the RWITC Invitational Trophy and that should be an interesting proposition."
Monopoly (Alnasr Alwasheek–Victory And Gold) won the Zarvari Plate at a fiery fast pace missing the course record timing by 0.02 seconds. Monopoly was the quickest to get off the blocks and maintained a good two lengths with Schnell in chase. Firefoot was close behind and the rest were finding the pace too hot to handle. Monopoly entered the straight and quickened well. Schnell tried hard to catch up and gave it his best shot but on this day Monopoly was just too good. Schnell ended a good second while Firefoot went all out but ended just alongside Schnell. Monopoly was at an advantage on the scales and on even terms the duo should provide an exciting battle.
Kamlesh's second victory for the day came in the very next race – The Johnnie Walker Green Label Salver, a mile race for maiden three-year olds astride Highland Crown (Royal Kingdom–Worthwhile). The race wore a completely open look and the markets also saw four horses enjoying a fair share of support. Chios was the one who could be termed "friendless" and it was he who nearly upset all calculations and caught the eye!
Bourbon Queen led the field till they straightened up and had Name For Fame, Handsome Returns and Highland Crown in close vicinity. Malesh chose to race Chios well off the pace and was tucked a couple of lengths behind the last but one Telstar. In the straight, bourbon King was clearly fighting a losing battle and was passed by Highland Crown midway up the straight. Chios suddenly sprang into action and looked the only threat to Highland Crown. The latter, however, finished on powerfully and kept Chios a length away at the finish. Both the winner and the runner-up ended up with a lot of positives and I am tempted to make a note of Chios and remember him in his next outing.
Malesh Narredu simply refuses to be kept out of the action for too long in his current form. He is riding with a lot of zeal and his sense of judgement is getting better with each passing year. He was solely responsible for the beauty of a ride that saw Hidden Danger upset the applecart of hot favourite Golden Kingdom in the very next race. Golden Kingdom, who had led the field till the home turn in the high profile SA Poonawalla Million, hit the front readily and was galloping well turning for home.
Hidden Danger (Hymn–Afshaan), who was keeping close tabs on the favourite in third just behind Sarjerao, suddenly sprang into action at the distance post. Malesh relied on his strong pushing and used the whip hand only to forge the Magan filly ahead and did not crack the filly, while on the contrary, Sunny Chinoy used the whale bone more than the permissible limits despite which Golden Kingdom went down narrowly. Sarjerao was a good third.
Malesh then struck for the second time with Shroff-trained Lil Miss Sunshine (Ontario–Top Glad). Settling well up in third over the mile, Lil Miss Sunshine cruised into the lead on turning for home and galloped away out of reach of her rivals. Here, Malesh used his whip a couple of times despite being well clear. Malesh later clarified when asked about this unusual act saying, "Hidden Danger was responding well to my pushing and I wanted her to keep up that rhythm. Lil Miss Sunshine though well clear gave me the feel that she might drift out so I used the whip more as a corrective measure."
The first race of the day was one by Ganador (Cruachan–Ganadora) who survived two severe assaults by Sudden Impact – one on the track and the other in the stewards' room. The ten-year old Charging Rhino showed good initial speed to lead the pack. King Of The Ring, Lady Trooper, Sudden Impact and Ganador were closely following. Modesty was sluggish at the start and Item Bomb was defused early on. The old timer was refusing to surrender the lead and was prominent till the distance post. Ganador put in a fast gallop and enjoyed a slender advantage when Sudden Impact poked through runners and came to contest the issue. The two fought bitterly and at the finish, Modesty too came alongside the pair with Lady Trooper breathing down her neck. The four-pronged finish saw Ganador prevail and Sudden Impact (Belose) protested to the stewards that Ganador's early jostle (near 800m) had cost him dearly. The Stewards, however, threw the objection aside and Ganador kept the race after due deliberations in the Stewards' room. Modesty is the one to watch out for in her next assignment.
Sea Gull (Placerville–Silver Academy) made it from end to end and had no trouble taking on her rivals. Once into the straight, Sea Gull sped away and Lovely Feelings, who was looking a picture in the paddock, found the winner too good. Sea Gull was impressive in her victory and a three-in-a-row is not ruled out for this Altamash Ahmed mare. Red Cloud never really was in the hunt and finished one off the frame. Caramel is getting ready and will place next time out.
It was a memorable day for Kamlesh who rode a brilliant treble. Trainer Bezan Chinoy and jockey M. Narredu scored a double each.
