Classic Art won The A.P.Race Horse Owners Association Trophy. Jockey N.M.Sequeira who replaced indisposed Suraj Narredu, used the chance mount to the best of his advantage. Classic Art had to encounter traffic problems during the early part of the race and braced the rear till the field straightened up. Crocodile Hunter had by then taken charge overtaking Buddy Brothers. Cefiro was beginning to warm up while Classic Art who was sighted widest of all flew past the field to win. Cefiro, Crocodile Hunter and Fly by Wire filled the board in that order.
The supporting event of the day was The S. Rangarajan Memorial Cup, the first race of the afternoon, run over 2000 meters. Rangappa as he was fondly known to all his friends, headed ‘The Hindu’ group of publications and was also Steward of the Hyderabad Race Club and Madras Race Club for a long period. Apart from being an avid racing enthusiast and a sportive owner, he was a generous sponsor of the sport. The Monsoon Derby at Hyderabad had ‘The Hindu’ tag for many years. This magnanimous personality will always be missed by the racing fraternity.
The race was won by Laxman Singh schooled Vijayam at nourishing odds. Following Realtor from the start, Vijayam overtook the leader on top of the straight without much fuss. Realtor managed to hold on to the second place by a neck from Dark Stranger, The favourite Silver Bullet finished a further distance behind fourth.
After Vijayam’s victory, a double for Laxman Singh was a formality in the second race, The Onnu Onnu Onnu Plate. Quoted as a moral certainty in the ring, Vijay Dhanush had no difficulty in winning the race. Retro Magic cut the wind till the bend as Vijay Dhanush who was improving throughout in the race went forward at 400 meters. Nandanvanaa and Valerie tried their best to catch the favourite but two taps from Harish was enough for Vijay Dhanush to accelerate.
L.D’Silva who is heading for another championship, led in Ravileena in The lower division of The Cape Knight Plate.
Ravileena named after picking few alphabets from all its owner’s names made it a start to finish affair. Christopher had driven his mount to the front taking advantage of the inner most draw. On top of the straight he had a useful lead of over four lengths and that came in handy at the finish as Penumatcha came as close to three quarters of a length at the wire. Classic One piped Hardccore on the post for third place.
Cannon Hunt won the upper division of The Eluru Plate from Millenium Queen, Asian Delight and Arsham. Justifying the favouritism, Cannon Hunt with Harish astride passed the early leader Lucrative at the distance post. Asian Delight who drifted out on the straight lost all his chances in doing so and finished third behind Millenium Queen.
Narayan Rao led in his second winner in the very next race on Kohinoor Eye. This time it was Gnaneshwar on the saddle. Kohinoor Eye who had missed the winning berth on his previous outing by a slender margin was ignored in the betting. Positioning well, behind Ujjaini in second Kohinoor Eye surged ahead within the final furlong and won well from Southern Spice and Sugar Gold.
The Major Mir Mujtaba Hussain Memorial Trophy was won by Satheesh trained King Size. As the field showed up on the home stretch Imran Khan guided King Size to the front and went clear from Rudolph Valentino and Dash on Regardless who tried to pose a challenge to the ‘King’ at one stage on the straight. Essence was withdrawn on medication grounds before the race.
Turning Point won the concluding event by the shortest of margins from Greatballofchina. The loading operations were interrupted as Jay Jay got unruly at the gates. He was subsequently withdrawn before the start. On the straight Turning Point shot to the front with Greatballofchina and Cabochon trying to essay a challenge. Greatballofchina shifted under pressure and momentarily affected Cabochon’s progress.
