Winter meet may commence in mid-December

Kolkata. Nov 4, 2008

The Calcutta winter meeting has received a serious jolt as the season is likely to commence in mid-December, more than a month after the scheduled start on November 9.

An unidentified virus strain has affected several horses at this centre, resulting in the stables at Hastings being quarantined. The track has been shut down for three weeks. No animal will be permitted to work until the situation improves.

Official sources stated that RCTC will review the situation after a month. In all probabilities, the winter season is likely to be curtailed to 20 odd race-days, with a longer monsoon season in the offing.
