Regal Music Wins The MCTM Chidambaram Chettyar Memorial Trophy

Mysore. June 19, 2008

A small card of six races was framed for Thursday's racing at Mysore withThe M CT M Chidambaram Chettyar Memorial Trophy enjoying the pride of place as the feature event of the day. Nine horses had accepted to face the starter in this sprint for horses in class III. The field was closely handicapped and the betting boards reflected the open nature of this race.Satin Slipper was a marginal favourite ahead of Valiant Romeo ,while the others were easily available at 6's and over. Regal Music had won a couple of races at Bangalore during the winter season, and had been sold thereafter to an owner who wanted to race him in Mysore. Since this was his first start with his new master, and also, because he was entrusted to apprentice Mukesh, Regal Music was ignored by the punters. Trainer Monnappa was delighted when Regal Music came through a tightly packed field and chargedaway to lift this coveted trophy.

Ambiens, Careerist and Assaye made the early running ahead of Satin Slipper, while the others were being pushed to stay in contention. The race took a dramatic turn as the field entered the straight. Careerist began to shorten his strides and was soon passed by Satin Slipper. It was at this very moment that Regal Music, Zooming and Master Prospect started to make a move from the rear. The four of them were almost abreast for a while, before Regal Music stormed through the middle and got the better of Satin Slipper.Zooming was able to nose out Master Prospect for the third spot. Less than two lengths separated the first four horses at the finish.

It was another day of outsiders dominating the majority of the races during the afternoon. The only respite came  when Satish Narredu trained favourite Guided Missile made a late dash and collared the front running Bountiful Beauty to win the last race of the day. This four year old was racing in class I during winter, and was benefited by the drop in scales at the end of the season. He had given an indication of his fitness by running a close
third in a race held two weeks ago at Bangalore. His trainer seized the opportunity and brought him to Mysore. He was given a very confident ride by jockey Christopher, who held him back till the final 200 metres before making his move. Guided Missile was an easy winner of this event.  He is headed back to Bangalore since his new rating makes him ineligible to run at Mysore. The heavily whipped Evanston plodded on to be third ahead of Red Key Point.

A quiet gamble was landed on the Santosh Rao trained Thunder On. This seven year old had run a faraway third to Eona in his last start, and had obviously profited by that run, because his connections decided  to back him with confidence. Shafiq settled Thunder On in second berth behind the runaway Outclas and asked him to quicken as they turned for home. The response was immediate and the duo sailed away for an easy victory over alate finishing Miami Gold and a tiring Outclas. Miami Gold has been running good races with the top weight, and he should be  fancied when his master decides to campaign him at a low handicap in the higher class.

Record Time, Classy Don and Clueless Puzzle were the other winners in the days card. All three of them were available at longer odds and won their races in close finishes. The winning post came to the rescue of Classy Don as Buddy came charging from the wrong end of the field. Buddy was literallylast as the heads turned for home and there was a wall of horses in front of him. Vijay Kumar had to pull him to the wide outside before essaying his challenge. Buddy was unlucky to lose this race today, and should make amendsin a similar set of horses in his next start.
