The A.P. Governor's Cup, run over six furlongs, attracted only three runners. The presence of Oasis Star kept most of the local challenge away with only Auxiliary and Lenavi accepting to run. Oasis Star was here at Malakpet during the Invitation weekend when she won The Sprinter's Cup and a Million Race, one over 1,200 and the other over1,400 metres, both in record timing. She covered the entire six furlongs on a tight rein and you can look at this run as a warm up race for her future outings. According to reliable sources, Oasis Star will be back at Malakpet for the running of The Melbourne Racing Club Trophy slated for the October 1, 2008 and from there on she will proceed to Dubai to hoist the Indian Flag.
Trainer L.V.R. Deshmukh had a glorious day at the races, bagging three races. In the second race his ward Colorful who had won her last outing from the front chose to run a waiting race. King Size, who had grabbed the initiative slipping in along the rails, was shaping like a winner when jockey Harish brought Colorful on the extreme outside with a terrific burst of speed to grab the race on the post. King Size stumbled 150 metres from home and missed a stride.
The fifth race was Deshmukh's second win, scoring on Maximise. Jockey Imran Khan chose to take Maximise to the front in this 1,800-metre race and held on by half a length from Coral Gables on whom Jockey Christopher rode a very ill-judged race. Christopher kept his mount off the pace till 700 and was not alert to decide on his move rounding the final bend. Coral Gables was travelling effortlessly around the bend with the rest of the field to his right. Christopher suddenly decided to check and guide his mount Coral Gables along the rails. By the time Coral Gables raised a gallop Maximise had won the race.
Deshmukh completed his treble in the sixth race. Cannon Scot gamely led the field till the last 300 metres when Harish grabbed the initiative on the favourite Glaring Godzilla with Flashy Trend, Super Brand and Winning Rays closing in. Glaring Godzilla went clear and the stablemate Drum Dance came up late on the scene to finish second. Flashy Trend finished third and Super Brand, fourth.
The first two races belonged to Trainer K. Satheesh. The opening event was won by Ice Candy whose odds melted down from 5 to 4 against to 10 to 8 on. There was literally no race for Ice Candy who won with a measure of comfort while Standing Ovation finished second, his third this season. Pacific Groove, who always warms up late, took the third spot.
The second race was run over 2,200 metres with seven runners lined up to take the start. Bossei Girl cut the wind and set her own pace. Nearing the last furlong, the favourite Realtor tried his best to catch the leader but Bossei Girl kicked on merrily to win.
Indian Dancer justified the favouritism winning the Second Division of The Nine Carat Plate. On top of the straight, Indian Dancer drew away from the field giving no anxiety to his followers. Prohibition, who covered a lot of ground, finished second while Star Crush and Pillantronics filled the frame.
The Astana Plate witnessed another close finish. Million Deal, who was in the lead throughout the straight, lost by a whisker to Man On Fire. Sugar Gold on whom there was some spirited betting was hampered for room as Million Deal began to shift out under pressure in the last 100 metres. Man On Fire who was moving the best won the race on the post.
In the concluding race, Laxman Singh trained Phar Lap was rock steady in the betting at 10 to 6 on. Phar Lap did the front-running till the last 200 metres. Accordion and Smarty Prince challenged Phar Lap and the former surged ahead to win. Nandanvanaa who was kept too far behind the front-runners in the initial part of the race came up well to pip Phar Lap to third slot.
Five first favourites obliged in a card of nine races. Trainer L.V.R. Deshmukh completed a treble while K. Satheesh won two races. Jockeys Harish, Imran Khan and Suraj Narredu scored a brace each.
