Taurian Wins in a Thrilling Finish
By Parjanya

Delhi. April 06, 2008

Behind every success lies some luck factor. Many might disagree with this, but it fits suitably with Taurian, who registered a stunning victory in the Grande Stakes Trophy on Sunday. He defeated Trinity, who is four years younger than him, on a day when youngsters dominated the turf.

The season is heading towards the fag end, but opening the door for the sponsors has started bearing fruitful results. After the Vaishnavi Kosmeticos multi-million which was held last month, the Unitech group added new dimension to the reputation of the Delhi Race Club by organising the races in such a way that never ever happened here. The stakes money distributed among the classes was on the higher side. The members’ enclosure wore a fuller look and a fashion show was also organised for the first time in the history of the club. Going through the memory lane, Usha and Mehra Stud had earlier chosen the same place to show the documentary over the Late Major PK Mehra. And recently, Vaishnavi group had shown the promos of its movie - Aasma.

A Heavy downpour in the early morning did not affect the going much, which was declared 'good' but the peneterometer reading (under little less than 3 cms) indicated that the timing was going to be slightly slower. It proved right as the way most of the races were keenly contested, faster timing could have been clocked.

Travelling eight early and sixth till top of the home straight, no one even guessed that the eight-year-old Taurian was going to have the date with the winning post. But he made the impossible possible. Apprentice jockey Irfan Ali never allowed him to rest and instead kept him pushing until he came into the position from where he could also stake a claim along with four horses. Trinity, who just managed to snatch the issue by pegging the leader Gin and Tonic back inside the distance post, tried hard to keep the challenge of the chestnut gelding away but it was the nostril of the latter that touched the wire fire. She's Sexy and Degas also showed some zest towards end but they could not find better place than finishing third and fourth respectively in a close order.

Taurian, who ran after a long lay off, was the yesteryear champion sprinter and had also tried his hands in the same event earlier in the season. But the fate kept the distance with him and later, he developed some fitness problem. However, the triumph will definitely boost his moral and if he maintains the form, more laurels would come his way. Trinity, who failed to cash-in on the advantage of handicap, should make amends. She's Sexy should now be followed over the longer trip. Degas has come hands. Gin And Tonic, who completed a quadruple last week, felt the burden of extra furlong. However, over the same distance, she will be hard to down in the next season.  The run of El Dorado is best ignored.

The day's opener Harmony Blitz Trophy saw King Challenge leaving Cornelia Supra dancing to his tune en route to complete his encore over the five furlongs. He should now be eyeing for a hat-trick. The latter should come out of the setback in the next outing. Trusted Friend took the trip of extra furlong lightly and became the other horse to earn his double by bagging the Fresco Dart Trophy. The gelding again tried to drift out in the last furlong but jockey Ramparvesh, however, managed to correct him in nick of time. He should extend his winning streak. Yet another youngster Solid Success came out of the shadow of poor show in the Usha and Mehra Stud Million and went ahead to raise a winning gallop in the Uniworld Chase Trophy over the mile.

Counterpart of Solid Success, Golden Gun shot the three-year-old companions in the supporting event of the day - Karma Speedway Trophy. He has the strides which can help him to earn laurels even over the mile. Invinsible Force finally met with the maiden success. Though the colt survived by a head over the six furlongs' capella Dash Trophy, he has the stamina to stay. Silver Zara, who was the runner-up, was taken to the task too early.
