Season of several highs

The 45-day Mumbai Racing Season will close out with a triple header this weekend. Across several parameters, this premier racing season was an all-round success and glimpses of a revival in the fortunes of the RWITC are now very much in evidence.

Up to the end of March, tote betting was up 10%, fixed odds turnover up nearly 30% and the bookmakers after years of consistent decline held up with a slight increase. Attendance till end March at 236,165 was also a tad higher than last year. What was pleasing was that attendance on the heavily promoted days recorded new highs and the 2000 Guineas Day, Derby Day and PBM Day set new benchmarks in recent years.

The big success story was of course, in sponsorships. Cumulative contributions at about Rs.220 lakhs, was nearly 1 crore up on last year, and the single factor responsible for ensuring a cash profit for our Club this year. Several new sponsors, co-sponsorship of the Indian Derby day, two full days sponsored, increase in million races across all age groups, and awarding such huge prizes as a speedboat, a Mercedes car, a solitaire diamond amongst other innovations gave the season its own signature. For the first time each sponsored day- through the season saw higher attendance and betting over Rs one crore on each big day.

The Stewards tightened policing norms, and with 42% first favourites winning, proved racing was run fairly. The Stewards have been more transparent when meting out punishments and have dealt with offenders with a firm hand. Constant dialogue with owners, trainers, punters and bookmakers were maintained. The unprecedented step of declaring a race void for malpractice by a jockey was punter friendly and sent a message we mean business. Committees have been recently formed to review medication rules as well as issues concerning bookmakers. The upper limit on trainers lots have been capped at 80 from next season on grounds of equity and as a greater inflow of two year olds will put a premium on stable space. Norms for participation of outstation horses are being tightened in the interest of the Western India owner, as do other centers. Surveillance of the bookmakers ring and general security are being reviewed seriously.

We recently decided to increase stakes in Pune by 10%, after a few years of stagnancy. We have also decided to give some push to the graded races by increase in stakes and modify the penalty structure in such races moderately to make it more equitable and competitive. Mobile phone charges are also going up from the point of revenue.

On the non racing front, the Club has finalized plans to proceed with the Club House and for the usage of some old structures for F&B facilities to boost race day attendance and draw increased visitors to our course. Should these fructify after all clearances are got, it will change the face of the Club.

Finally, after the heat and din of a over heated election was over, the Committee has generally worked in unison for the betterment of the sport, with few, if any serious misgivings. The stage is set for Pune after a long, tiring but immensely rewarding Mumbai season for the Club, our members and most importantly, the sport.
