Finsceal Beo trounces 1000 Guineas field

On Sunday at Newmarket, Finsceal Beo, the 5-4 public choice, ran away with the 1000 Guineas. In Irish, the name means a 'living legend.' She may not be a legend yet but she is on her way to becoming a 'super star.' I saw her at Longchamp last October when she trounced a talented group.

There were 21 runners. There were two defections. Sander Camillo was one of them.

Finsceal Beo was handy behind the pace-setting Scarlet Runner as the field settled down. Kevin Manning shot to the front with two furlongs to go. The winning margin was 2 1/2 lengths and the time was 1 34.94, the fastest in any Guineas race.

Jim Bolger, the winning trainer said, "she's is a brilliant filly. The traumatic week is over. We've gotten over it. She will bext go in the Irish 2000 Guineas and on to the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot."

Teofilo's withdrawal from the 2000 Guineas had shaken up the Bolfer establishment. The trauma he was referring to was the commotion generated by Teofilo's absence in the 2000 Guineas.

"She can go longer. She is versatile, "said Kevin Manning, the successful rider.

The Guineas was Finsceal Beo's sixth career start. It was her fourth win and it was worth 198,730 pounds.

Arch Swing, an Irish-bred, took the runner-up berth. Simply Perfect was third.

Finsceal Beo is by Mr Greely. Her dam is Musical Treat, a Royal Academy mare.

Sixties Icon won the Jockey Club Stakes in decisive fashion, a supporting event. Ridden by Frankie Dettori, Sixties Icon, the 2006 St Leger Winner, was prominent during the 12-furlong race and hit the front midstretch to win by three lengths. The time was 2.33.52.

"It was a good performance and he did it smoothly," said Jeremy Noseda, the winning trainer. Sixties Icon's next target is the Coronation Cup at Epsom Downs on June 1, English Oaks day.
