Dr. Jain spurns Chairman Emeritus proposal

The racing media in Mumbai and the fraternity at large has been agog with rumours of a proposal to appoint Dr. Shashi Chand Jain, as Chairman Emeritus of the RWITC.

Indiarace has reliably learnt that at a Managing Committee meeting held on Monday, Dr.Jain, spurned the offer even before it was debated by those present. It is gathered that Dr. Jain stated that unnecessary and motivated controversy was created, in what was a straight forward matter and chose to side step the offer in view of the greater need to maintain harmony in club affairs.

It is also gathered that Dr Jain opined that as he is more than likely to re-contest for a seat on the Committee in December, any such appointment would have to wait till he announces his retirement.

Dr. Shashi Jain, considered by a vast majority of members as the grand old man of Indian racing, held the post of Chairman of RWITC for an unprecedented 13 years in the 80s and 90s. In spite of an over ten year hiatus, he staged a grand come back last year by scoring highly as part of Dr. Cyrus Poonawalla's panel. His son, Vivek, in spite of the father-son issue, retained his topmost position in the voting ladder with comfort.

The recent imbroglio is yet another instance of the murky politics at the RWITC. Dr.Jain's decision at the Committee Meeting put finality to unfounded rumours and allegations of a growing rift between Dr.Poonawalla and Vivek Jain.

Though Dr. Shashi Jain has refused what would have been a path breaking honour, it is felt that sooner or later Dr. Jain would be rightfully awarded this position, in view of the esteem in which he is held by a large section of the electorate.
