Tragedy struck during track work at the Pune race course Saturday morning when Anand Gawade who was astride Tapis fell and suffered fatal injuries.

The jockey, who was aged about 43 years, had made his mark as an apprentice, riding for the late Y M Choudhary. Although he was a regular presence during track work, he had not been astride any winner in recent years. Gawade changed his name as Anand sometime during the last decade perhaps hoping for better luck but he could never recapture the success
which he had as an apprentice. Anand also rode at Mysore some years ago.

Anand’s unfortunate death once again highlighted the grave risk that the jockeys are exposed to. Yogender Singh, S S Bhati, Kavan Kariappa are the other three jockeys who died in track accidents in recent years.
