Jockey Mallesh Narredu was arrested by the Pune police on Saturday 9th September and later remanded to magisterial custody for two-weeks on Sunday after a 20-year-old girl accused him of rape.

The unidentified girl approached the Cantonment Police Station, which is close to the racecourse, and lodged a complaint on Saturday. Mallesh was subsequently brought for questioning and arrested under sections 376 and 417 of the Indian Penal Code.

The girl in her complaint accused Mallesh of luring her into a sexual relationship with promises of marriage.

Mallesh has flatly denied these accusations and stated that he was a victim of blackmail by the girl, who has been harassing him for the past few months. The jockey was produced in a local court on Sunday and was later sent to the Yerawada Central Prison after the judge denied the police custody of Mallesh.

Mallesh's lawyers are due to file a bail application on his behalf.
