It is official now. Royal Calcutta Turf Club (RCTC) will be hosting the Indian Turf Invitation Cup weekend in March 2007. Gen. (retd) Shankar Roychowdhury, Chief Steward, RCTC, broke the news to the media on Wednesday. This brings to an end the state of uncertainty that had gathered about the ability of RCTC to host the Invitational races in view of financial constraints faced by the club. RCTC had to shift the year 2001 edition of the Invitation Cup to Bangalore following a wild card strike called by an RCTC workers’ union two days before the big event.

However, the ‘Invitation’ dates may need to be changed in view of March 3 being a public holiday on account of the Holi festival. The city transport system remains paralysed on that day till well after 2 PM. More importantly, most of the news dailies suspend their publications on the festival day. “We haven’t finalized dates yet;” said Gen Roychowdhury. A final decision onthis matter will probably be taken after consultations with the other turf clubs.
