Trainers strike off, races as scheduled

The Karnataka Trainers Association called off their strike demanding the amendment to Medication Rules even before the effects of their agitation could be felt and as such, the races programmed for the weekend will go on as scheduled. It was always on cards that the trainers would retract without pressing for their demands, going by their track record, on the ground that the authorities had assured them that they would be favorable to their demands.

In this instance, the Chairman of the Bangalore Turf Club Harindra Shetty had an unofficial meeting with the representatives of the Karnataka Trainers Association Thursday night and his mid-night parleys have had the desired result. At a meeting of the trainers held Friday morning, they resolved to put in their entries and everything is back to normal. The trainers, in their Press Meet, had made a categorical statement that they had all along lived on assurances but now the time had come for decisive action. Obviously, old habits die-hard and they are once again tempted by the bait of assurances, from the Chairman of the Club when past experience had shown such a thing had no sanctity in the history of BTC.

The Bangalore Turf Club officials too facilitated the entire process by being elastic in keeping the scratching time. Technically, once the deadline for scratchings was over, the races should have been declared null and void because all entries were taken out. But the turf club kept on postponing the timings being sure that the errant trainers would come back. Theoretically, the races programmed should have been re-framed but then compromises are what rule the Bangalore Turf Club. Strikes are an integral part of the Bangalore Summer Season and since the jockeys or the syces had not stepped in to cause any disruption in support of their demands, the trainers perhaps felt that they needed to fill in the void! And hence the aborted strike!
